BCM waste Indaba 2018 ended yesterday, at which the city engaged with all stakeholders around a very unpopular topic “Waste”. The city’s annual waste management Indaba was well received by community members and government officials alike. Where industry experts, community, government and intellectuals share the idea of joining a circular economy to re-use as much as we can. As per city officials, up to 80% of waste is still being disposed at landfills in the region a figure they wish to combat by monetizing the city’s waste and in doing so reducing the city’s waste emission gasses. Through a learning model the city engaged with stakeholders from surrounding metro’s to share best practices amongst them. Some of the current challenges the city faces is having only two landfill sites and one buyback centre according to solid waste general manager Nomphelo Daniel. KGI Holdings used the opportunity to display, the medical sterilization units as a solution to the treatment of medical waste. The waste is shredded into tine particles <15mm in diameters which is then sterilized and qualified as solid waste.
